US Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates for the First Time Since 2023 Amid Ongoing Inflationary Pressures

The US Federal Reserve, on Wednesday, raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, amid ongoing inflationary pressures and rising energy costs.

According to Bloomberg News, the Federal Open Market Committee unanimously decided to raise the interest rate by a quarter percentage point, bringing the target range to between 3.75 and 4 percent, in line with market expectations.

The bank said the committee made its decision by a majority of 12 votes, with no opposition, and will continue its approach of maintaining ample levels of reserves in the banking system.

According to the US Central Bank's statement: "Economic activity is expanding at a strong pace, and despite the ongoing uncertainty, partly due to geopolitical developments, domestic spending has shown notable resilience, productivity growth is strong, and capital investments are experiencing significant momentum; job gains have kept pace with workforce growth, while the unemployment rate has remained virtually unchanged"

It added: "Inflation remains at high levels, and today's monetary policy action is expected to support a faster return to the Committee's goal of an inflation rate of 2 percent, as the Committee is committed to achieving price stability"

The US Central Bank's decision came after consumer price data released last week showed the US Consumer Price Index rising by 0.4 percent on a monthly basis in August, and by 3.4 percent on an annual basis, well above the target rate.

The data showed the energy price index rising by 2.1 percent in August, and by 16.3 percent on an annual basis, while the gasoline index rose by 3.9 percent during the month.

The Federal Reserve's return to raising interest rates for the first time since July 2023 comes amid ongoing concerns about inflation becoming entrenched above the target level and rising energy costs in light of geopolitical developments.
