UN: More than 300,000 people have fled the fighting in western Yemen

The United Nations announced on Sunday the displacement of more than 300,000 people in Yemen due to intensifying fighting in the west of the country, noting that the vast majority of displacement cases were recorded over the past two months.

In a statement, the International Organization for Migration called "for the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers, and to ensure safe and unhindered access for humanitarian aid," especially in hard-to-reach areas.

The head of the IOM mission in Yemen, Abdul Sattar Essof, said, "After years of conflict, families in Yemen are once again being forced to flee, often with nothing but the clothes on their backs."

He added, "They are in dire need of shelter, food, clean water, and healthcare. Without further funding, thousands of families risk being left without the assistance they desperately need."

Yemen returned to war in July, following 4 years of relative calm, against the backdrop of the conflict in the Middle East.

The fighting has led to a sharp rise in the prices of basic commodities. In some cities, the cost of essential goods has multiplied between three to five times due to the fighting hindering the arrival of supplies.

Five mobile medical teams affiliated with the IOM are operating in four governorates (Marib, Lahj, Aden, and Taiz).

In light of growing humanitarian needs, the IOM estimates the required funding over the next six months at approximately $45 million to provide life-saving assistance, including shelter, emergency financial aid, healthcare, access to drinking water, sanitation services, and the protection of displaced persons.
