However, two naive defensive errors cost Tuchel's men two goals for Spain.
Marc Guéhi lost the ball to Lamine Yamal, who seized the opportunity to give the Spanish team an early lead, before Nico O'Reilly's misplaced pass led to the equalizer scored by Álex Baena, shifting the advantage and momentum back to the Spanish side.
Then, striker Mikel Oyarzabal completed the Spanish comeback by scoring the winning goal, just as he did when the two teams met in the Euro 2024 final.
The defeat means England has only achieved six victories in their last 16 matches against teams ranked in the top ten of the FIFA world rankings.
Tuchel said: "I was not responsible for those 16 matches, of course, and I think we did everything necessary today to beat Spain."
He added: "Details make the difference at this level. As I said, we made too many obvious mistakes today, and unfortunately, in the final third, they were calmer and more decisive in turning our loss of possession into clear-cut chances."
Tuchel was seeking to provide a response to his critics after a series of defensive-minded substitutions, especially after England also squandered a lead against Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals.
But this time, ambition was not absent from a match characterized by great openness, even though Tuchel admitted that England is still unable to deliver the same level consistently throughout 90 minutes.
He continued, "We will continue to work and push this team."
He added, "We proved in the World Cup that we can do it in tournaments. Today we couldn't prove it through the result, but I think the way we played was enough to beat them."
England now faces two consecutive matches against the Czech Republic, with a trip to Croatia in between, over the next ten days.
Best levels
For his part, Kane said that the "Three Lions" delivered some of their best performances in a long time.
Kane told ITV: "We performed well in the World Cup, but we couldn't put in a complete performance over 90 minutes. And perhaps that happened again today."
He added: "We had many good moments, and I think that period (around the end of the first half and the beginning of the second) was one of the best periods we have played in a very long time, and this is the level we know we are capable of reaching."
He continued: "We are facing the world champion and the European title holder. We faced them as equals, and on another day, for sure, we would have won this match."
In turn, Spanish national team coach Luis de la Fuente said that Spain is still capable of developing further, despite extending its unbeaten record to 39 matches.
He commented on the win: "What this generation of players is achieving deserves great praise. They are constantly seeking to develop and improve. The statistics speak for themselves."
He added: "What Spain is doing is extremely difficult. We will treat the next match against Croatia as if it were our last. These players always want to keep improving."
De la Fuente said of the performance of his young star Lamine Yamal: "His performance was exceptional, and we are lucky to have him with us."
He added: "He plays exactly according to what the match requires, taking advantage of his own potential and the potential of his teammates alike."
