Trump blames immigration for protests and acts of violence in France

US President Donald Trump considered on Sunday that immigration is the cause of the unrest witnessed in France, and urged Paris to "close the borders," the day after large-scale protests marred by acts of violence.

Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, "France is burning! The immigration of people from a completely different world, people who carry hatred in their hearts, has destroyed that once-great country." He added, "Close your borders and take control, before it is too late!"

French President Emmanuel Macron will deliver a televised address to the French people on Sunday evening, according to the presidency, the day after large-scale protests marred by acts of violence and rioting.

The Élysée Palace explained that the speech will be broadcast after a meeting Macron holds with a number of ministers, on a day the country is assessing the repercussions of the protests that were organized against the high cost of living, and witnessed clashes between demonstrators and police, in addition to acts of arson, looting, and storming of official buildings.

The protests come 6 months before the French head to the polls to elect a successor to Macron.

The riots were more intense than those witnessed during the 2023 protests and the "Yellow Vests" demonstrations in 2018 and 2019.

Macron vowed to pursue and punish "everyone who committed acts of vandalism, attacked institutions or companies, or participated in acts of looting."
