The United States to host the first Women's Club World Cup in 2028

The United States will host the inaugural edition of the FIFA Women's Club World Cup in January 2028, with the participation of 19 clubs from various continents.

This was announced by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) on Thursday via its website, setting the period from January 5 to 30 as the dates for the tournament.

The federation explained that the selection of the United States was based on its experience in hosting major tournaments, the development of its sports infrastructure and related services, as well as the growing interest in women's football in the country.

The new tournament will be held every four years, with the participation of clubs from the six continental confederations, as part of FIFA's plans to develop women's football at the club level and enhance its global reach.

According to the distribution of slots, Europe receives 6 spots, compared to 3 spots each for Asia, Africa, North and Central America and the Caribbean, and South America, with one spot for Oceania.

FIFA revealed that 7 clubs have qualified: Arsenal (England), Barcelona (Spain), Club América (Mexico), Gotham FC (USA), Naegohyang (North Korea), Corinthians (Brazil), and Wuhan Jiangda (China).

The remaining 12 clubs are to be determined according to the qualification criteria approved by each continental confederation.

FIFA's Chief Women's Football Officer, Sarai Bareman, said the tournament will bring together qualified clubs to showcase the strength and diversity of women's football to a global audience.

She added that participation will give clubs the opportunity to highlight their history, expand their fan base, and strengthen their presence on the international stage, describing the inaugural edition as a historic event for women's football.

FIFA had previously announced that the first edition of the tournament would be held in 2028, to be organized every four years.

The scheduling of the tournament for January 2028 comes after the Women's World Cup scheduled in Brazil in 2027, and before the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States, in 2028.

The United States previously hosted the expanded version of the men's Club World Cup in 2025 and co-hosted the national team World Cup in 2026 alongside Canada and Mexico.
