The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced on Thursday that the United States will host the inaugural edition of the Women's Club World Cup in 2028.
The international federation stated that "the decision was made considering its experience in organizing FIFA tournaments, the maturity of its infrastructure and services, and the level of interest from various stakeholders in women's football in the country."
The tournament will be held from January 5 to 30, 2028, and will bring together 16 elite clubs from all six continental confederations.
FIFA stated that the launch of the tournament represents "a milestone in the professionalization and global expansion of women's club football, as it provides elite clubs with a true global platform to compete every 4 years."
The first edition was initially scheduled to be held in 2026, but FIFA postponed the launch of the tournament for two years to benefit from an appropriate timeframe after the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil and before the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The United States has a proven track record in hosting major sporting events, having hosted the men's World Cup this year.
