The President and the Youth of Jordan

It has become clear that his state's focus is on the Jordanian youth sector, its issues, and the mechanisms for its qualification and training, a focus that is not limited to media statements and sweet talk that we have heard and continue to hear from officials without seeing its impact on the ground, and in the reality of Jordanian youth, while Dr. Jafar Hassan is distinguished by working for the youth, qualifying them, and developing their potential. For example, hardly any of his state's field visits to various regions of the Kingdom to learn about their reality is without a visit to youth and women's centers in these areas, to learn about the reality of these centers and their needs, and then to meet these needs, along with issuing decisions and directives to meet these needs, and emphasizing to the relevant officials the importance of continuing to hold educational, professional, and sports qualification courses for members of these youth centers, as was recently done during his state's visit to the youth and women's centers in Qadisiyah in the Liwa of Basira, in the governorate of Tafila, where his state directed the provision of the youth and women's centers with a computer laboratory and the necessary tools and equipment to expand its activities, improve its facilities, and establish a playground to serve the beneficiaries.

Dr. Jafar Hassan's interest in youth issues and his endeavor to develop youth and women's centers touch my heart and bring to mind beautiful memories dating back to the early 1970s, when youth and women's centers played a central role in retrieving Jordanian youth from the intellectual and political confusion that prevailed during the years of chaos that swept our country after the June defeat, and reached its peak in 1970.

During that period, youth and women's centers were affiliated with the Youth Welfare Institution, and its General Director was His Highness Prince Raed bin Zaid, and its Secretary-General, the driving dynamo, was His Excellency Sharif Fawaz Sharaf with his nationalist thought, and the supervisors of youth centers were an elite of educators who believed in their country and nation. Therefore, youth centers were a torch of daily activity.

I was a member of the Irbid Youth Center, which was supervised by the educational and youth and scouting leader, Professor Fahd Qaqish, so the movement and activity did not stop at the center, from the election of the center's various committees, where we learned the first practical lessons of democratic practice, to the professional workshops in which center members trained in practicing different manual professions within the center, to the cultural activity, where we issued a printed magazine concerned with national issues, and foremost among them were youth issues, where I was the editor-in-chief of this magazine and supervised its printing in one of the Irbid printing houses.

Youth centers also exchanged visits among themselves across cities, organized joint activities, and got to know the regions of their country, its history, and its monuments. Thus, youth and women's centers were a crucible for national fusion and cognitive construction for Jordan's youth and women.

We all hope that the efforts of Dr. Jafar Hassan's state will bear fruit for what our homeland aspires to from Jordan's youth.
