Spaniard Sanchez as coach of the Bahrain national team

The Bahrain Football Association has signed Spaniard Felix Sanchez, the former coach of Qatar and Ecuador, to oversee its first national team, succeeding Croatian Dragan Talajic, it was announced yesterday.

Talajic was dismissed from his position last week following the group stage exit from the Gulf Cup in the Saudi city of Jeddah, with three losses against the UAE, Qatar, and Yemen.

The Bahraini Federation stated that Sanchez will begin "his duties officially during the FIFA window next November."

Sanchez (50) led the Qatar national team to win the Asian Cup in 2019 for the first time in its history, but his journey in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar ended early with three losses in the group stage, leading to his dismissal after the finals following 5 years in the position.

He took over coaching Ecuador in March 2023 and led them to 10 victories in 19 matches before being dismissed in July 2024.

He returned to Qatari pitches to oversee Al-Sadd club in the 2024-2025 season, leading them to a league and cup double, before being dismissed in October due to the team's declining results.

Important upcoming challenges await Sanchez, most notably competing in the 2027 Asian Cup and the 2030 World Cup qualifiers.
