Bahraini Football Association ends contract with Croatian coach Talajic by mutual agreement

The Bahraini Football Association announced on Monday, the termination of the contract with the technical staff of its national team led by Croatian Dragan Talajic by mutual agreement between the two parties, five days after losing its title as the Gulf Cup champion in Jeddah.

The Bahraini Football Association said in a statement published on its Instagram account: "The Board of Directors of the Bahraini Football Association extends its thanks and appreciation for the efforts made by the technical staff of the national team led by Croatian coach Dragan Talajic during the past period, wishing them continued success and success in their future career".

It added: "The Board of Directors of the Bahraini Football Association will, during the coming period, study a number of submitted CVs in preparation for selecting one of them and revealing the identity of the technical staff of the national team, especially with the upcoming commitments of the national team, most notably the 2027 AFC Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia".

The Bahraini national team lost its title as the Gulf Cup champion at the end of last month after suffering three consecutive defeats in the group stage, the last of which was a harsh defeat to Yemen 2-5, after opening its campaign with a loss to Qatar 0-2 followed by a fall to the Emirates 0-3.

The Bahraini Football Association had contracted Talajic on February 20, 2024, succeeding Argentine Juan Antonio Pizzi, after the latter's contract was terminated by mutual agreement following his participation in the AFC Asian Cup finals in Doha.

The resort to Talajic's services, who is 60 years old and was born in Sarajevo, was due to his good knowledge of Bahraini football after leading Al-Khaldiyah Club to the Bahrain Cup title (2022), and then working in the Bahraini Football Association as a technical director.

Talajic spent most of his coaching career in the Middle East and the Gulf, where he coached many clubs, starting with Saudi Arabia's Ittihad Jeddah and led them to the AFC Champions League title (2004), then Bahrain's Al-Rifa and Al-Rifa Al-Sharqiya, Oman's Al-Nahda and Dhofar, Jordan's Shabab Al-Ordon and Al-Wehdat and Al-Faisaly, Kuwait's Al-Kuwait, UAE's Ittihad Kalba, Saudi Arabia's Al-Taei, Thailand's Muangthong United and China's Henan Jianye.
