Several beaches along the coast of Western Australia, including those in the state capital Perth, remain closed until at least Sunday following a deadly shark attack on a popular beach in the city on Friday.
A swimmer was killed after being mauled by a shark at Sorrento Beach, about 20 kilometers from Perth's central business district, leading to the closure of beaches along a 17-kilometer stretch of the coast.
The state government said on Saturday that beaches in the Joondalup area of Perth would remain closed until at least midday Sunday (0400 GMT). It added in an alert that "officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will continue to conduct land patrols."
Friday's incident is the latest in a series of shark attacks in Australia, coming after a surfer in the same state was bitten by a shark in an attack on Monday.
The surfer was attacked on a beach in the city of Geraldton, about 400 kilometers north of Perth. Local media reported that he lost one of his feet and suffered serious leg injuries.
This follows the killing of a 35-year-old man while spearfishing off the state's south coast in June, and the death of a 38-year-old man after a shark attack at an island near Perth in May.
