Saudi Arabia: The Maritime Defense Coalition Transitioned from Establishment to Actual Work

The Western Fleet Command in Jeddah Province held the fourth planning meeting for the multinational Maritime Defense Coalition on Thursday, with the participation of 154 naval force leaders, planners, ambassadors, and European Union representatives from 41 countries.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the meeting comes as the coalition continues its transition from the establishment phase to actual work, after reaching the Initial Operational Capability (IOC) stage, where it is currently working on integrating capabilities and preparing for operational execution and actual presence in the maritime operations area.

The agency added that the meeting discussed updates on the work and achievements during the past phase, and the progress of countries joining the coalition, as the phase witnessed several countries signing the charter and joint statement, while there are currently 28 liaison officers.

The meeting also discussed joint work requirements and determining the contributions of participating countries in terms of capabilities, supporting multinational defensive operational execution in a coordinated and integrated manner, and enhancing the coalition's operational readiness.

It pointed out that the meeting represents the fourth planning phase, an advanced stage in the coalition's path, as the focus shifts to enhancing operational readiness and preparing it to work under a unified command, leading to its deployment and the start of operational tasks in the responsibility sector, starting from the fact that protecting the freedom of navigation and maritime straits and passages represents a shared international interest that requires active partnership, diverse capabilities, and collective response.

The coalition works to support the security and safety of maritime navigation in accordance with international law, within a multinational operational environment based on unity of command, integration of capabilities, and information exchange, and coordinating efforts to counter threats targeting maritime navigation security and passages in the responsibility sector.
