Salah leads Trabzonspor to victory over Hearts in the Europa Conference League

Egyptian star Mohamed Salah led his Turkish team, Trabzonspor, to a 2-0 victory over visiting Scottish side Hearts on Thursday at "Papara Park" during the second matchday of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Salah scored his team's first goal from a penalty spot before setting up the second goal for his Guinean teammate Franculino Dju, handing Trabzonspor their second consecutive victory in the continental competition.

With this win, the Turkish team raised their tally to 6 points from two victories, temporarily occupying fourth place on goal difference behind group leaders Panathinaikos of Greece, while Hearts remained on one point in 24th place.

The visiting team posed early danger and almost opened the scoring in the 6th and 7th minutes after Norwegian Kristian Borchgrevink unleashed a long-range shot, taking advantage of Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana being off his line, but the latter successfully cleared the ball into a corner kick.

Calvin Miller took the corner kick, and Englishman Malachi Walcott rose to head the ball toward the goal, but his attempt rebounded off the bottom of the left post before reaching Jamie McCart, whose shot passed across the face of the goal without anyone following it into the net.

The 14th minute witnessed refereeing controversy that led to a two-minute stoppage in play after the ball touched a Hearts defender inside the penalty area following a cross from Mohamed Salah, but the referee, after reviewing the video assistant referee (VAR) monitor, ruled an offside against the Egyptian star.

The hosts waited until the 32nd minute to open the scoring after the referee awarded a penalty kick when Guinean Franculino Dju was fouled inside the area by Icelandic Tómas Magnússon, allowing Salah to successfully convert it and give his team the lead.

The Egyptian star raised his tally to 10 goals in various competitions across 11 matches played with Trabzonspor since joining the team during the summer transfer window from English side Liverpool.

Dutch goalkeeper of Hearts, Pio Reus, saved his goal from a Trabzonspor attempt in the 45+3rd minute by blocking a powerful shot from Moroccan Benjamin Bouchouari inside the penalty area, following a cross from Franculino and a dummy by Salah, depriving the Turkish team of extending their lead.

In the second half, Trabzonspor continued their attacking pressure and successfully added the second goal through Franculino, who unleashed a curling left-footed shot from inside the penalty area into the far top corner, following a one-two with Salah, who provided the assist to his Guinean teammate.

German coach of Trabzonspor, Thomas Reis, made several substitutions in the 71st minute, most notably withdrawing Salah and Bouchouari after they delivered a stellar performance and contributed to cementing the Turkish team's superiority.

Trabzonspor finished the match with ten players after their Cape Verdean defender Sidney Cabral was sent off in the 90+5th minute following a second yellow card, after which the referee blew the final whistle, handing the team three new points in their European campaign.
