Portugal this year experienced the hottest September since temperature records began in 1931, according to the National Meteorology Agency announced on Wednesday.
The average temperature during the month was 23.4 degrees Celsius, 2.9 degrees higher than the average for the period between 1991 and 2020, according to the agency.
It added that the average maximum temperatures reached 31.03 degrees Celsius, exceeding the usual average by 4.21 degrees, which is the highest in its records.
The country witnessed two heatwaves during the month, which was the fifth driest September in terms of precipitation since 2000.
Last May, Portugal recorded a record temperature for that month of 40.3 degrees Celsius.
The agency reported last week that this summer was the third hottest summer since records began.
