Plane crash anniversary brings Chapecoense and Nacional together again

The Brazilian club Chapecoense will play a friendly match against Atletico Nacional on September 26 in Colombia, commemorating the tenth anniversary of the plane crash that was carrying the Brazilian delegation on its way to Medellin to play the Copa Sudamericana final.

On the night of November 28, 2016, 71 people died when the plane carrying Chapecoense players and staff, as well as journalists heading to play the first leg of the final, ran out of fuel and crashed on a hill 18 kilometers from Jose Maria Cordova Airport.

The Brazilian club was declared the 2016 Copa Sudamericana champion at the request of its final opponent, Atletico Nacional, and since then, the two teams, who both wear green jerseys, have forged a special relationship.

The match will be held at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium, the Colombian club's home ground in Medellin, as announced by Chapecoense on Friday via "X".

The Santa Catarina state club returned to the first division this year, after being relegated to the second division in 2021, exhausted by the sporting and administrative repercussions of the tragedy.

For its part, Nacional recently signed Colombian international James Rodriguez (35) as its latest acquisition.

Among the six survivors of the accident, three football players stood out: full-back Alan Ruschel, who is still playing at the age of 37 with Juventude club; defender Neto, who retired in 2019 without being able to return to the pitch due to the aftermath of the accident; and Jakson Follmann, the former goalkeeper who had one of his legs amputated and became a preacher and singer.
