Number of sprint races increased in the Formula 1 World Championship

The number of sprint races has been increased from six to ten in the 2027 Formula 1 World Championship calendar, it was announced on Wednesday. The 24-round season will kick off in Bahrain and conclude with the final race in Abu Dhabi.

The season is scheduled to begin on March 14 with the Bahrain Grand Prix, which returns to its usual slot as the season opener, followed immediately the next week by the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, after both were canceled this season due to the war in the Middle East, while the Australian Grand Prix becomes the third round.

After Japan and China in April, Formula 1 heads to Miami and Montreal the following month, with a three-week gap between them.

The first European round will be on the streets of Monaco on June 6, with added excitement in the principality as the sprint race is added there for the first time.

Portugal returns to the calendar for the first time since 2021 with a race at the Algarve circuit in Portimão on June 20, followed by the British Grand Prix on July 4 at Silverstone, then Austria, Belgium, and Hungary before the summer break.

The season resumes with the Italian race on September 5 at the Monza circuit.

Like Portugal, Turkey also returns to the calendar with a race scheduled for October 3, while the Netherlands is now off the calendar.

The season concludes with back-to-back races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi on December 5 and 12 respectively, both featuring a sprint race.

The sprint race will be held for the first time in Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi, while it returns to Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, and Qatar.

Formula 1 management commented on the 2027 calendar in a statement, saying, "Due to continued success and strong demand... the number of sprint races has increased from six to ten in 2027, providing more competition throughout the season for fans, organizers, broadcasters, and partners."

It added, "Since the introduction of the sprint race in 2021, data shows that total viewership for weekends featuring a sprint race is 12 percent higher compared to weekends without one, and sprint race qualifying is up to three times more popular with fans compared to free practice."

Pre-season winter testing returns to a single four-day period in Bahrain between February 24 and 27.

Regarding the conclusion of the 2026 season, Formula 1 confirms that the Qatar and Abu Dhabi races will take place as scheduled on November 29 and December 6 until further notice.
