Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has narrowed the gap with his right-wing rival Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of the presidential election runoff scheduled for October 25, according to a poll whose results were published on Thursday.
Flávio, the eldest son of former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, led the first round of the elections on October 4, securing 47% of the vote compared to 45% for Lula.
Lula, who aspires to win a fourth presidential term, is seeking to regain momentum by strengthening his presence on social media, in parallel with taking social measures that could attract voters.
The voting intentions poll conducted by the Datafolha institute and published on Thursday showed that the two candidates are statistically tied, as Flávio was granted 51% of the vote against 49% for Lula, a percentage that falls within the margin of error of two percentage points.
The same poll had given Bolsonaro 52% last week compared to 48% for Lula.
In another poll conducted by the Quaest institute on Wednesday, Bolsonaro received 51% compared to 49% for Lula.
