Baghdad announced on Friday that it has obtained an exemption from the United States from sanctions allowing Iranian airlines to operate flights to and from Najaf Airport, just days after a similar exemption for Iraqi Airways.

The Iraqi Prime Minister's Office confirmed in a statement, "An agreement has been reached to allow 40 daily flights to and from Najaf Al-Ashraf International Airport for Iranian airlines, excluding Mahan Airline," following efforts aimed at "facilitating the movement of passengers and visitors coming to or leaving Iraq, and supporting humanitarian, therapeutic, tourist, and educational aspects."
