India seeks to strengthen its role as a mediator between Moscow and Kyiv

New Delhi is seeking to strengthen its role as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine to end the war between them, according to Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Sunday.

The minister said during a session in New Delhi at the policy, security, and diplomacy forum known as the Munich Security Conference, "Our position on this conflict is very clear. We want it to end, and we know it happens through dialogue and diplomacy."

He added, "We have been working on this for years, but in recent months our engagement has increased, going beyond calls to discussions with Russia and Ukraine on this matter."

The Indian Foreign Minister met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv in early September, after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged "friend" Russian President Vladimir Putin to settle the conflict on the sidelines of a summit in Kyrgyzstan.

Jaishankar stated that India "seeks to be helpful, starting with the issue of maritime security in the Black Sea" to discussions on grain or energy exports or "non-aggression" measures, noting that "exchanges are ongoing."

On Sunday, Zelenskyy announced that the United States intends to hold trilateral talks with Ukrainian and Russian representatives in late October as part of US diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
