In Messi's name.. Discovery of a rare plant in Peru sparks interest amid warnings of its extinction

According to a study published in the journal "Phytotaxa," which specializes in plant taxonomy, the plant grows in mountainous regions of central and southern Peru, and draws attention with its flowers that combine light blue and white, resembling the colors of the Argentine national team jersey associated with Messi's football career.

"Salvia messii" belongs to the Lamiaceae family, which includes plants such as mint, sage, and basil, and reaches a height of about 1.5 meters.

The plant grows on rocky slopes in mountainous areas, at an altitude ranging between 2,000 and 2,400 meters above sea level, making it linked to specific natural habitats.

Researchers chose the scientific name Salvia messii to honor Messi, in accordance with the rules adopted for naming plant species, turning the fame of the Argentine national team captain into part of a new scientific discovery.

The importance of the discovery does not stop at the name the plant bears, as it faces environmental challenges that threaten its survival, most notably its limited distribution and the changes affecting its natural habitat.

Risks include frequent fires, drought, and climate change, in addition to human activities that affect the areas where it grows.

These threats highlight the need to protect rare plants and preserve biodiversity in the Andes, especially species that are concentrated in limited geographical areas and are more susceptible to environmental changes.

The research team included Paul Gonzales, from the Natural History Museum at the National University of San Marcos in Peru, Argentine researcher Rolando Uria, and biologist Jan Capcha-Ramos.

Naming the rare plant after Messi represents a different form of global appreciation for the Argentine star, whose influence has transcended the boundaries of stadiums thanks to his sports career and international fame.

At the same time, this discovery provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of rare plants and the risks they face, at a time when environmental challenges threatening many species around the world are increasing.

Thus, "Salvia messii" combines the name of one of the most famous football players with a botanical discovery that carries an important message regarding nature conservation, making its story more than just a sports tribute, extending to the issue of preserving environmental diversity and facing the risk of extinction.
