Big names join

Injuries continue at the start of the NBA season, with new absences announced for a number of prominent players, including Anthony Edwards, Kawhi Leonard, and Jaren Jackson Jr.

Edwards, the Minnesota Timberwolves star, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, which is expected to keep him sidelined for about two months, according to American media reports.

ESPN reported, citing unnamed sources, that Anthony Edwards began clutching his knee during his team's win over Toronto on Sunday.

Although he was listed as questionable on Monday due to a knee injury, he played 41 minutes and scored 47 points in the loss to Cleveland.

The 25-year-old All-Star had already been suffering from right knee issues last season, related to patellofemoral pain syndrome, which causes chronic inflammation and pain.

This season, he has had the best start of his career, averaging 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.

For his part, the Utah Jazz lost the services of Jackson Jr. due to a right knee injury as well.

Several American media outlets reported that the 27-year-old player will not need surgery after suffering a ligament tear, but he will be out for at least six weeks.

The 2023 Defensive Player of the Year was injured after colliding with Memphis Grizzlies player Ty Jerome on Monday.

Jackson Jr. had moved to Utah in February after spending eight seasons with Memphis, but he only played three games with his new team last season before undergoing left knee surgery.

The Utah Jazz also lost their Finnish star Lauri Markkanen, who is suffering from a wrist sprain, with his condition to be re-evaluated day-to-day, according to the club.

The Toronto Raptors announced on Tuesday that their star Kawhi Leonard, who was excused from participating on Sunday against Minnesota, will be out for at least a week due to swelling in his left knee.

The club explained in a statement that the player "will undergo a treatment and rehabilitation program to address the swelling."

It added, "The MRI did not show any acute injury, and Leonard's condition will be re-evaluated after a week," referring to the player who joined Toronto this summer from the Los Angeles Clippers, and who led the Canadian team to the league title in 2019.

Leonard is 35 years old and has suffered several injuries to his right knee during his career, particularly in the 2021 and 2023 playoffs.

These injuries add to other absences, most notably Oklahoma City players Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, in a major blow to the 2025 league champions. Frenchman Maxime Raynaud will also be out for the Sacramento Kings for at least two more weeks due to a partial dislocation of the right patella.
