The French Football Federation will announce its position today, Thursday, regarding Gianni Infantino's candidacy for a new term at the head of the International Federation (FIFA).
The decision will be revealed on Thursday afternoon, following an executive committee meeting to be held at the federation's headquarters.
Unless a major surprise occurs, the French Federation is expected to withdraw its support for Infantino, according to a source familiar with the file, who explained that the decision must be taken collectively rather than unilaterally.
The head of the global football body is clinging to his position despite calls for his resignation and pressure exerted by several national or continental federations that have withdrawn their support for him, even though he is the only declared candidate in the elections scheduled for March 18.
For weeks, the world of football has been witnessing a sharp division over his management style, which his opponents describe as lacking transparency, accusing him of developing a project, without consultation, to create a commercial company open to private sector investors with a stake of up to 20%, to which World Cup revenues would be transferred.
Faced with the wave of objections sparked by the disclosure of the project, the Italian-Swiss official, who has been FIFA president since 2016, abandoned it after only four days.
Since then, several European federations have withdrawn their support for Infantino, including Sweden, Scotland, Italy, and Belgium, along with groups of fans, former players, and one of the FIFA Council vice-presidents, the Hungarian Sándor Csányi.
According to the source familiar with the file, the French Federation opposed this project, which was considered "inappropriate" in terms of content, form, methodology, and due to the lack of transparency.
