The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) accused European football’s governing body (UEFA) of launching a "disinformation campaign" as part of its bid to obtain documents relating to Gianni Infantino’s aborted plan to sell parts of the World Cup.
In a FIFA filing in a case pending before a Florida court, it said that UEFA's bid to force the global body to hand over these documents also constitutes an attempt to "influence" next year's FIFA presidential election.
Global body president Infantino sparked widespread controversy in July when he put forward proposals to create a subsidiary commercial company to manage FIFA's marquee tournaments, such as the World Cup and the Club World Cup.
The plan would have allowed private sector investors to acquire stakes in a company to be created under the "FIFA Forward Enterprise" initiative. However, the ensuing backlash led to the proposals being quickly withdrawn.
FIFA stated in the court memo that UEFA is making "numerous false or misleading statements" regarding Infantino and the international body, including the claim that "Infantino sought personal gain from the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal."
AFP contacted UEFA for a response.
UEFA, which includes World Cup holder Spain and football powerhouses such as France, England, and Germany, is leading the opposition front against Infantino, publicly demanding his removal.
FIFA confirmed this month that Infantino will run for re-election as head of the organization in elections scheduled for next March, despite criticism sparked by his investment plan, which was subsequently abandoned.
This week, Infantino sent a letter to FIFA's 211 member associations, indicating the possibility of distributing larger sums to members from the federation's cash reserves.
Infantino said in the letter seen by AFP that he would support "the maximum level of additional funding that can be responsibly provided."
Infantino stressed in the letter that the abandoned proposal to sell the World Cup's commercial rights was intended to provide additional funds for football.
Infantino wrote: "The recent commercial proposal, which has now been withdrawn, was intended to enable FIFA to invest more in football."
However, Infantino does not lack supporters, as Saudi Arabia, host of the 2034 World Cup, announced its support for him last month, and he also enjoys the backing of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and CONMEBOL.
