The National Public Health Agency in France said on Wednesday that the country recorded at least 817 excess deaths above the normal rate from July 27 to August 20, coinciding with a wave of extreme and exceptional temperatures.
This brings the total number of excess deaths recorded in France since June, with the onset of successive heatwaves, to about 8,000 cases.
The number includes all deaths, regardless of cause, and is an estimate based on death certificates issued during the mentioned period.
People aged 75 and over were the most affected, accounting for the largest proportion of excess deaths.
The agency recorded about 5,764 excess deaths from June 17 to July 2, and about 1,243 deaths from July 3 to 20.
Meteorological experts said that this year Europe has seen severe heatwaves linked to climate change caused by human activities, which were more intense than those experienced by any other continent.
