European Union seeks to address unsustainable trade deficit with China

European Union Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič announced on Thursday that he is visiting China in an effort to "address an unsustainable trade deficit" for the EU with the world's second-largest economy.

Šefčovič began important two-day talks on Thursday aimed at preventing an escalation of tensions, at a time when the EU is affirming its commitment to addressing the trade deficit, which has reached about one billion euros per day with China since 2025.

Šefčovič wrote on social media, "The first day in China begins with the goal of starting to rebalance our unsustainable trade deficit with Beijing."

He added that he began his visit by meeting with representatives of European companies in China, who, according to him, are seeking to "improve their access to the Chinese market."

Brussels and Beijing have been in dialogue for months to resolve the crisis. Europeans denounce massive Chinese government subsidies for local companies and excess industrial production capacity that is flooding the European market with low prices, threatening entire sectors such as the automotive industry.

They also criticize the obstacles placed in the way of European companies' access to the Chinese market, the manipulation, from their point of view, of supply chains, and the devaluation of the Chinese currency.
