Eala makes a comeback to reach the quarterfinals of the ((Tokyo Tennis)) tournament

Rising Filipino star Alexandra Eala overcame a deficit against Australian Talia Gibson to secure a well-deserved 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory at the Tokyo clay-court tournament yesterday, Wednesday.

Eala, ranked 19th globally, said after her win, "It took a lot of effort to change the course of the match." It seemed that Eala's streak of early exits from tournaments she participated in might continue after Gibson, ranked 38th globally, clinched the first set in her favor at the Pan Pacific Open.

However, Eala held her ground and managed to level the score, before significantly raising her performance level and dominating the decisive third set.

The 21-year-old player explained that this turnaround was the result of a "gradual improvement in level," adding, "Perhaps it was about some small details that make a big difference when they accumulate."

She continued, "At one point when the score reached deuce (30-30), I made a bolder offensive decision, and at another deuce moment, I took a similar step."

She added, "These small details, when they come together, are what make the difference."

In the quarterfinals, Eala will face Russian Diana Shnaider, the third seed in the tournament.

Last August, Eala became the first player from the Philippines to win a title on the WTA tour, and every step she takes now receives widespread attention in her home country.

Eala, who managed to hit 9 aces and broke Gibson's serve six times, continued, "Of course, public support helps a lot at all times."

She added, "It creates a wonderful atmosphere, and there was lively interaction among the fans. When you are fully focused and immersed in the match, concentration comes naturally."

Shnaider qualified for the quarterfinals with a hard-fought victory over Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.

Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina, the world number one, will play her opening match on Thursday against her compatriot Yulia Putintseva.

Also, local favorite Naomi Osaka will play her match against Slovakian Mia Pohankova, who is participating via a wildcard.
