Cranberries: Natural protection for teeth against decay

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago showed that natural, sugar-free cranberry juice may help reduce dental plaque buildup and decrease the production of acids that damage tooth enamel.

The experiment included 22 people, including 14 children and eight adults, who were randomly divided into three groups. The first group consumed 100% natural, sugar-free cranberry juice, the second group drank a beverage containing 27% juice with added sugar, while the third group drank water.

Before the experiment began, researchers collected samples of dental plaque that had accumulated on the participants' teeth overnight, then asked them to consume their assigned beverages and rinse their mouths with them several times. After 30 minutes, they took new samples to compare the results.

The results showed a slowdown in plaque growth among participants who consumed the natural, sugar-free juice, along with a decrease in the production of acids resulting from the activity of bacteria that feed on sugars and contribute to weakening tooth enamel. This effect was observed in both children and adults alike.

Researchers suggest these benefits are due to proanthocyanidins found in cranberries, which are natural substances that may limit the adhesion of certain types of bacteria to surfaces and cells.

Researchers point out that natural cranberry juice could be a useful addition to oral and dental care, though the results require further studies to confirm its long-term effectiveness. Daily dental care using a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste also remains essential, while ensuring the selection of sugar-free juice to avoid increasing the risk of decay.
