Baku Climate Action Week 2026: Strengthening the Global Energy Transition

Baku Climate Action Week 2026 kicked off in Baku with broad international participation to discuss practical solutions to climate challenges, accelerate the transition toward more sustainable economies, and foster cooperation and knowledge exchange. This event is held in primary partnership with SOCAR Green, coinciding for the first time with the Climate Week of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The discussions also addressed Azerbaijan's growing role in green energy, opportunities for exporting renewable electricity, and prospects for developing green hydrogen. Furthermore, the discussions covered Azerbaijan's expanding role in regional green energy value chains, including opportunities for exporting electricity generated from renewable sources and the prospects for developing a green hydrogen industry in the future, amid growing regional and international interest in clean energy sources.

Focus on the Energy Sector Transition

The first day's activities focused on the most prominent global energy and climate issues, primarily the climate action path from COP29 to COP31, climate finance, decarbonization, methane emission reduction, the development of carbon markets, and regional energy cooperation.

Officials and representatives from COP29, COP30, and COP31, the UNFCCC, IRENA, and a number of international institutions participated in the discussions, emphasizing the importance of turning commitments into concrete actions and results. The sessions also addressed the role of innovation, digital technologies, renewable energy, renewable energy certificates, and mechanisms for attracting investments in accelerating the transition toward low-emission economies and enhancing energy security.

From COP29 to COP31: Maintaining Momentum

Mukhtar Babayev, the Azerbaijan President’s Representative for Climate and COP29 President, emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum achieved following the hosting of the conference and transforming climate commitments into tangible actions and results.

He stated that hosting Baku Climate Action Week for the third year reflects Azerbaijan's priority in strengthening climate action, turning dialogue into practical steps, and building new partnerships. He noted that the week's coincidence with the UN Climate Week provides an opportunity to advance international negotiations and strengthen cooperation in preparation for COP31.

For her part, Nigar Arpadarai, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 and Director of the Baku Climate Action Week project, affirmed that the event has established its position among the most prominent global climate weeks, noting Azerbaijan's continued pivotal role in the international climate agenda after COP29 through hosting events and fostering climate dialogue and partnerships.

Energy, Innovation, and Regional Cooperation

Roundtable discussions addressed the role of electricity, energy efficiency, and digital solutions in accelerating the energy transition, alongside ways to reduce methane emissions in the Caspian Sea region. Experts emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between governments, financial institutions, companies, and technology providers, expanding renewable energy projects, modernizing electricity grids, and leveraging innovation and digital technologies to increase energy efficiency and accelerate the transition toward more sustainable and lower-emission systems. The program featured a series of key roundtables that addressed a number of issues related to the energy sector transition, primarily the role of electricity in accelerating the energy transition, increasing energy efficiency in buildings, and employing digital solutions to develop sustainable infrastructure. The discussions also highlighted the growing importance of regional energy interconnection projects and their role in enhancing supply security and integrating energy markets, in addition to supporting efforts to transition toward clean energy sources and accelerating the pace of decarbonization at the regional level.

Artificial Intelligence and Climate-Resilient Development

The week's activities extended to examining the role of modern technologies in enhancing climate change adaptation through a session on digital transformation and artificial intelligence in agriculture. It showcased innovative experiences, including the AI-based farmer assessment system developed by Azerbaijan in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Participants discussed the role of artificial intelligence and data analysis in enhancing the agricultural sector's ability to face climate challenges, improving water resource management, and supporting the development of more sustainable food systems.

Continuous Expansion in Scale and Ambition

Baku Climate Action Week continues to expand its scope and impact year after year. After the 2025 edition saw the organization of 46 events covering more than 30 thematic areas, the 2026 program includes 15 major high-level meetings, in addition to a wide range of events organized by partner entities. The events, in cooperation with the Fourth Implementation Forum within UN Climate Week, contribute to bridging the gap between climate commitments and practical implementation.

Baku Climate Action Week 2026 continues until September 11, serving as a platform for fostering partnerships and investments and accelerating the transition toward a more sustainable future, while Baku continues to solidify its position as a hub for international dialogue on energy and climate action.
