Atletico Madrid clinched the derby against their neighbor Real Madrid when they defeated them 2-1 on Sunday at the "Metropolitano" stadium in the capital during the seventh round of the Spanish Football League.
Alejandro Grimaldo (53 from a penalty) and Canadian Jonathan David (59) scored for Atletico Madrid, and German Antonio Rudiger (89) scored for Real Madrid, who played with ten players since the 52nd minute after the expulsion of their international defender Dean Hausen.
This is the second loss for the Royal Club this season, after the first against their guest Real Betis (0-1), so they dropped to third place, one point behind Atletico Madrid, which temporarily rose to second place.
The Royal Club, the runner-up of last season, is six points behind their traditional rival Barcelona, the reigning champion and the only team with a perfect record so far.
The turning point in the match was the expulsion of the defender Dean Hausen for causing a penalty after pulling the shirt of Atletico's coach Giuliano Simeone's son, which Grimaldo successfully converted (53).
Real Madrid's Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho made two substitutions immediately after the goal, bringing in defender Rudiger and Ivorian winger Yan Dieumadie in place of Turkish midfielder Arda Guler and Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior (54).
But David extended Atletico Madrid's lead with the second goal following a pass from Simeone (59).
Rudiger reduced the gap a minute before the end of regular time with a header following a free kick taken by Portuguese international Bernardo Silva, a substitute for English international Jude Bellingham.
Getafe narrowly defeated their guest Malaga, the newly promoted team to the top league, with a single goal scored by Ivan Asun Monzon in the 85th minute.
This is Getafe's second win this season, raising their points to eight and moving them to ninth place, while Malaga, who are in last place, have three points from three draws.
Later, Villarreal will play against Levante, and Deportivo La Coruna will play against Real Betis, and Valencia will play against Real Sociedad.
