Aqaba-Shounah-Ma'an Railway: A Turning Point in Phosphate Exports

The laying of the foundation stone for the railway project by His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi, marked a turning point in this sector.

The project is expected to reduce transportation costs, especially with the growth of phosphate exports through the Port of Aqaba, improve operational efficiency, enhance logistical services, and reduce the environmental impact associated with traditional heavy transport means.

Over the past years, the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company, one of the most important mining companies in Jordan, has emerged, with its exports surpassing those of many of its global counterparts, due to the significant characteristics of Jordanian phosphate, most notably; the high quality of the ore and its good content of phosphorus pentoxide, the main material in the production of phosphate fertilizers, in addition to the abundance of reserves; it is mainly extracted from areas such as Shounah, Al-Hisa, and Al-Wadi Al-Ahmar. In addition to the relative ease of mining in some deposits, as its deposits are found within sedimentary layers that can be extracted by surface mining methods, alongside its diverse uses; it is used in the production of phosphoric acid and fertilizers, in addition to other chemical industries.

Phosphate has great economic importance for Jordan, as it is one of the most important mineral ores that enter Jordanian exports and manufacturing industries.

The railway project is of great importance to the Jordanian economy, especially with the increasing demand for Jordanian phosphate in global markets, considering the quality of Jordanian phosphate ore, which is suitable for fertilizer and phosphoric acid production, and its close association with the fertilizer industry and global food security, in addition to the quality, availability, and Jordan's ability to export and manufacture its derivatives.

The company's project is of paramount importance and is relied upon for exporting phosphate, especially to countries that transport phosphate from mining areas to ports, due to reasons related to reducing transportation costs; as the train can transport large quantities of phosphate in one trip, at a lower cost than trucks, as well as increasing export capacity, which helps the railways to transport larger quantities regularly to ports, reducing congestion on roads, and increasing competitiveness due to lower transportation costs, which contributes to making phosphate more competitive in foreign markets, in addition to reducing environmental impact by transporting large quantities by train, which is usually more fuel-efficient than transporting the same quantity by trucks.

The economic and logistical importance of the railway lies in reducing operational costs; through the project's contribution to reducing the cost of transporting phosphate and potash by about $40 million annually, as well as increasing the competitiveness of exports; which enhances the ability of mining and Jordanian industries to reach foreign markets with higher efficiency.

The project also supports the transport sector; as it transports approximately 13 to 16 million tons annually of phosphate and potash in its first phase, which alleviates the heavy pressure on the road network.

The project contributes to consolidating the logistical role, as it connects the Port of Aqaba with mining areas and the land port of Ma'an, supporting the transformation of Jordan into an integrated regional center for transport and logistics services.

It also contributes to environmental protection, as trains are considered a more environmentally friendly means of transport with lower carbon emissions compared to trucks.

The Aqaba-Shounah-Ma'an Railway project is expected to provide about 5,000 job opportunities in southern Jordan during the design, construction, operation, and maintenance phases; including engineering, construction, train operation, logistics facility management, and safety and maintenance.

In addition, it stimulates indirect job opportunities: opens the door for the prosperity of supporting sectors such as: engineering industries, technology, support services, retail trade, and contracting.

In conclusion, the presence and operation of this project in the coming phase will contribute to the continuity of exports, through the existence of a dedicated railway network for transporting minerals, and helps in the regular arrival of phosphate to global ports, overcoming shipping challenges and rising costs.

The railway represents a key link between phosphate mines and export ports, contributing to reducing costs, increasing exported quantities, and improving transport efficiency.
