Al-Zaidi donates $10 million to the Umayyad Mosque and the Sayyida Zeinab Shrine in Damascus

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi donated $10 million from his personal account on Wednesday to the Umayyad Mosque and the Sayyida Zeinab Shrine in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

This came following a visit Al-Zaidi paid to the Umayyad Mosque and the Sayyida Zeinab Shrine, accompanied by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani, according to two statements issued by the Iraqi Prime Minister's media office.

The office explained in a statement that Al-Zaidi visited the Sayyida Zeinab Shrine, performed prayers inside the shrine's courtyard, and then toured its landmarks.

It added that the Prime Minister donated $10 million from his personal account, with $5 million allocated to meet the needs of the shrine and an equal amount for the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus.

Earlier, Al-Zaidi visited the Umayyad Mosque accompanied by Al-Shaibani and performed prayers in its sanctuary before viewing its historical landmarks, according to a previous statement by his media office.

The statement indicated that Al-Zaidi wrote a note in the guestbook at the Dome of the Treasury located in the mosque's courtyard.

The media office had also announced at the time that Al-Zaidi had donated an amount from his personal account to contribute to meeting the mosque's needs, without specifying the value, before the subsequent statement revealed it to be $5 million.

Earlier on Wednesday, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa received the Iraqi Prime Minister and his accompanying delegation at Damascus International Airport, according to the Syrian News Agency "SANA".

This is the first official visit Al-Zaidi has made to Syria since taking office in mid-May.

Al-Sharaa and Al-Zaidi previously met in New York last September on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, in the presence of Al-Shaibani.

The meeting at the time addressed ways to enhance political and security coordination and expand economic and trade cooperation, in addition to issues of common interest, according to "SANA".

Al-Zaidi's arrival in Damascus followed an official visit he made to Jordan on Monday, during which he met with King Abdullah II and discussed enhancing economic, trade, and investment cooperation and developing joint projects.
