The death toll from a fire that broke out on a ferry in the Philippines has risen to 76, while 13 people remain missing, according to Philippine authorities.
According to Reuters, Philippine authorities said on Saturday that rescue teams recovered the remains of 41 additional charred bodies from the wreckage of the ferry, which was carrying more than 130 people, as forensic teams began identifying the victims.
On Friday, authorities transferred 30 bodies to the port of Coron town, where temporary tents were set up to examine the bodies and identify their owners.
According to the Maritime Industry Authority of the Philippines, citing accounts from survivors, two explosions were heard inside the vessel just before the fire broke out, while one survivor reported that a small fire spread very rapidly inside the ferry.
This fire is the latest in a series of deadly maritime accidents in the Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,600 islands where millions rely on ferries and small boats to travel between regions and islands.
