Wednesday's Champions League matches witnessed a record-breaking goal fest, as the nine encounters saw 46 goals scored, an unprecedented tally for a single night in the history of the continental tournament.
The second round of the league phase concluded on Wednesday in an exceptional evening filled with big wins and thrilling comebacks, as the goal tally surpassed the previous record set on October 21 of last year by three goals.
According to the French newspaper "Le Parisien", the scoring average reached more than 5 goals per match, while the newspaper described the evening of October 14, 2026, as the most prolific night in the history of the Champions League.
The match between Liverpool and their hosts LASK Linz topped the scoring scene with nine goals, ending in a 6-3 victory for the English team, while Real Madrid stole the spotlight with their comeback against Roma, turning a 1-3 deficit into a 4-3 victory with three consecutive goals in the final minutes.
In another encounter, Paris Saint-Germain achieved a remarkable 4-2 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, after ending the first half leading by three goals to nil, before the English team narrowed the gap in the second half without succeeding in avoiding defeat.
The round also saw Aston Villa win 6-0 against Fenerbahçe, Feyenoord beat Como 3-2, Real Betis defeat Porto by the same score, while Shakhtar Donetsk won against AEK Athens 3-1, Bodø/Glimt against Borussia Dortmund 1-0, and Stuttgart against Slovan Bratislava 3-0.
None of the nine matches ended in a goalless draw, while three teams failed to score: Fenerbahçe, Borussia Dortmund, and Slovan Bratislava.
Wednesday's goals brought the total goal tally for the second round to 78, a new record for the number of goals scored during a single round of the competition, marking one of the most exciting and prolific rounds in the tournament.
