The United States concluded fiscal year 2026 with a budget deficit of nearly $2 trillion, the latest indicator highlighting the scale of financial pressures facing the country.
The US Department of the Treasury stated on Friday that the deficit reached $1.992 trillion, an increase of about 12 percent over the deficit recorded in the previous fiscal year, which stood at $1.775 trillion, according to CNBC.
This is the third-largest annual deficit in US history, surpassed only by the years 2020
and 2021, when the federal government injected trillions of dollars in fiscal stimulus packages amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a Treasury Department official, fiscal year 2026 saw record figures for both revenue and spending.
With this announcement, the United States officially records a budget deficit for the twenty-fifth consecutive year.
The last time the government achieved a surplus, meaning when revenues exceeded expenditures, was in 2001.
