The UAE national team seized the lead of Group Two in the Arabian Gulf Cup football tournament 'Gulf Cup 27', with a 1-1 draw against their Qatari counterparts, on Wednesday, at the 'Al-Inma' Stadium in King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, within the third and final round of the group stage.
With this result, the UAE team raised its score to 7 points, leading the group by goal difference ahead of the Qatari team, after both teams secured their qualification to the semi-finals in the previous round.
The UAE team will face the Omani team, the runner-up of Group One, on Saturday, while the Qatari team will meet the host and Group One leader, Saudi Arabia, on the same day.
The match began with mutual attempts by the two teams, before the Qatari team succeeded in opening the scoring in the 33rd minute, through Al-Moez Ali, who converted a cross from Jassem Jaber from the right side with a strong shot into the net.
The UAE team almost equalized after 5 minutes, when Khalid Al-Dhanahi shot a ball from outside the penalty area, which went over the crossbar.
In the second minute of stoppage time for the first half, Ali Saleh equalized for the UAE with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area, which the Qatari goalkeeper was unable to stop.
In the other match in the group, the Yemeni team achieved a surprise by defeating the Bahraini team, the defending champions, with a score of 5-2, in a match of no consequence, after both teams officially exited the competition in the previous round.
The Yemeni team ended its participation in the tournament in third place with 3 points, while the Bahraini team finished at the bottom of the group without any points.
Saudi Arabia is hosting the 27th edition of the Gulf Cup for the fifth time in its history, and the first time in Jeddah, from September 23 to October 6, with the participation of 8 teams.
