The Pharaohs regain confidence with a crushing victory over South Sudan

The Egyptian national team regained confidence with a crushing 5-0 victory over its host South Sudan on Tuesday in the second round of Group B matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

This big win at the National Stadium in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, comes after the Pharaohs stumbled with a goalless draw against Angola in Cairo in the qualifiers opener last Friday.

Mostafa Abdel-Raouf "Zico" (36), Omar Marmoush (49 and 83), and substitutes Ibrahim Adel (75) and Hamza Abdel-Karim (90+2) scored the goals for the Pharaohs, who raised their tally to 4 points at the top of the group, pending the match between Angola and Malawi to be held on October 6 in Luanda.

Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan fielded Omar Marmoush and returning-from-suspension Marwan Attia in the starting lineup instead of Mohamed Salah and Mahmoud Saber.

Salah left the camp due to the artificial turf pitch, according to a statement by the Egyptian Football Association before the match.

After the Pharaohs dominated the first half, they managed to find the back of the net in the 36th minute following a team effort during which Ahmed Fatouh exchanged the ball with Emam Ashour, before Fatouh sent a cross from the left flank that Zico met with a direct shot into the top right corner of goalkeeper Majak Mawit's net.

After the break, Marmoush doubled the visitors' lead with the second goal in the 49th minute when he received a long pass from Muhanad Lasheen, went one-on-one with Mawit, and skillfully deposited the ball into his net.

With this, Marmoush ended a 17-match goal drought with both his clubs and the national team, for whom he last scored in a 4-0 friendly win over Saudi Arabia last March.

Hossam Hassan brought on Karim Hafez and Ibrahim Adel in place of Fatouh and Haitham Hassan in the 53rd minute.

In the 75th minute, Marwan Attia sent a long ball to Ibrahim Adel, who struck it powerfully into Mawit's net, scoring the third goal in a manner similar to Marmoush's goal.

In the 82nd minute, Hossam Hassan brought on Ahmed Sayed Zizo and Osama Faisal in place of Marwan Attia and Zico. Just a minute later, Emam Ashour passed a through ball to Marmoush, who dribbled past Mawit and scored, adding his second personal goal and the fourth for the Pharaohs.

Hassan made another substitution in the 86th minute by bringing on Hamza Abdel-Karim in place of Marmoush.

In the second minute of stoppage time, Osama Faisal took a shot that was saved by Mawit, but Abdel-Karim was in the right place to follow it up into the net, scoring his first international goal.
