Amman —

The Basra-Aqaba pipeline, by the way!

Meanwhile, talk is escalating about another project, which is exporting Iraqi oil through Syrian territory, and steps toward it have become serious under American sponsorship and attention.

It is no secret that the project was on the table during the visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi to Jordan, and His Majesty King Abdullah II had preceded these discussions by raising the project during a phone call with Al-Zaidi.

The pipeline is an important outlet for Iraq, as the arrival of its oil to Aqaba means its strong entry into the Mediterranean region, and the movement of the project was no coincidence, given the beginning of the launch of other projects.

Importantly, the attention needs to find an umbrella of consensus among all parties to the equation.

The Iraqi-Jordanian oil pipeline (Basra-Aqaba) had received bids from 8 companies before it was halted; the delay occurred for security reasons, but hopes that until recently seemed like threads hanging in the air have returned closer to the hour of truth.

Meanwhile, the past few days have witnessed statements indicating that Iraq intends to work on a route to export one million barrels per day via Syria in a first phase, with these quantities heading to Europe. Iraq and Syria have begun preparing and arranging to transport limited shipments of crude oil by land via tankers from southern Iraq fields (Zubair 1 or 2 stations) to the port of Baniyas on the Mediterranean, as a phased and secondary option until pipelines are established.

Both projects are important for Iraq, which should not have to choose between them. The Basra-Aqaba oil pipeline project predates any other projects, and it has reached its final stages in preparation, equipment, and tender issuance.

Iraq is a strategic depth for Jordan, and vice versa, and there is no escape from a good relationship intertwined in interests and strategies, and it is unacceptable for it to be affected by certain stances here or there that may not be pleased with this rapprochement.
