Significant losses at Manchester United despite record revenues

The annual net loss of the English football club Manchester United rose by about a third to 43 million pounds (57 million dollars), despite announcing record revenues yesterday, Wednesday.

The "Red Devils" announced revenues of 677.6 million pounds (899.2 million dollars) for the year ending June 30, an increase of 1.7 percent.

However, the club announced a seventh consecutive annual loss after taxes, as the cuts made by co-owner Jim Ratcliffe in operating costs were offset by contractual payments to the dismissed Portuguese coach Rúben Amorim and a significant increase in loan repayments.

The latest financial results relate to the turbulent 2025-2026 season, which saw former United player Michael Carrick replace Amorim and lead the team to qualify for the Champions League.

The rise in revenue was driven by an increase in broadcasting income, thanks to the team finishing third in the Premier League, after ending the previous season in fifteenth place.

However, commercial and matchday revenues both fell by about five percent during a season in which the team did not play any European matches. Broadcasting revenues jumped by about 20 percent.

United's accounts showed that it paid 8.2 million pounds (10.8 million dollars) in exceptional items, most of which related to the departure of Amorim, who left in January after 14 months in charge.

It also revealed that the club paid 63.5 million pounds (84.2 million dollars) to acquire land adjacent to the Old Trafford stadium site, where it plans to build a new 100,000-seat stadium.

Ratcliffe oversaw large-scale cost-cutting measures, many of which were unpopular and included laying off a large number of staff, after completing a deal to buy a stake in the club in February 2024.

United CEO Omar Berrada said the latest figures show the club's underlying strength, adding in a statement, "This shows the direct impact of the work we have been doing over the past two years, and also proves the enduring popularity of Manchester United and its commercial strength."

He continued, "While these results confirm that we are on the right track, we will continue to take a disciplined approach to ensure the sustainability of our financial position."

United expects revenues to range between 740 and 760 million pounds (more than a billion dollars) in the current fiscal year.

Carrick's team started the new season poorly despite signing a group of new players during the summer transfer window.

United has collected only five points from its five league matches, equaling its worst-ever start to a season, and was also eliminated from the League Cup last week.
