Nestlé bets on basketball to attract Gen Z

Nestlé bets on basketball to attract Gen Z

The multi-year partnership will span 21 markets across four continents, starting on January 1, 2027, with the Philippines joining the agreement in October of the same year.

Under the agreement, the "Milo", "Nesquik", and "Neskau" brands will become official partners of the league, launching joint marketing campaigns and youth-oriented initiatives, alongside participation in a number of sporting events.

The partnership is not limited to using the NBA logo in advertising campaigns and on product packaging; it extends to supporting youth basketball programs, including Jr. NBA, Jr. WNBA, and NBA Basketball School, as well as events such as NBA Global Games and NBA House.

Ali Abbas, Head of the Cocoa and Malt Beverages Business Unit at Nestlé, explained that the company aims to encourage at least 2.5 million young people to engage in physical activity, emphasizing the importance of communicating with new generations and keeping pace with their interests and trends.

The plan also includes launching promotional competitions that give consumers a chance to win match tickets and league-related merchandise, alongside placing NBA logos on products. The company has not yet announced the financial details of the agreement.

This step comes amid the growing reliance of global companies on sports tournaments within their marketing strategies, especially as they strive to enhance their presence among Generations Z and Alpha. Major companies such as PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, and Unilever are turning to sports sponsorships as a means that combines wide reach with direct audience engagement.

According to WPP group data, sports account for about 70% to 75% of total global spending on marketing sponsorships, while consumer goods companies represent 18% of spending on sports sponsorships, globally and in the United States.

Sports partnerships provide companies with opportunities that go beyond traditional advertising through digital campaigns, social media platforms, and content creators, alongside events and experiences that allow consumers to directly interact with brands.

This strategy aligns with Nestlé's orientation toward linking its products to concepts of activity, movement, and healthy lifestyles, with a focus on building an ongoing relationship with younger generations.

The basketball partnership is not Nestlé's first step in this field, as the group's "Kit Kat" brand previously concluded a global agreement in 2024 with the Formula 1 championship, running from 2025 to 2028, marking the brand's first global marketing partnership with the championship.

These agreements reflect a corporate trend toward unifying marketing efforts internationally, rather than relying on separate partnerships in each market, capitalizing on the popularity of major sports tournaments and their ability to reach diverse segments of consumers.

Through these moves, Nestlé is betting that investing in sports will not only enhance the reach of its brands, but will also contribute to cementing its presence among new generations in a market where interaction and direct experience are increasingly important in influencing purchasing decisions.
