Medical Warning of the Risks of Early Smoking on Children and Adolescents

Consultant of Respiratory Diseases and member of the Council of the Medical Syndicate, Dr. Muhammad Hassan Al-Trawneh, warned of the risks of smoking at an early age, affirming that starting smoking during childhood or adolescence affects the growth and efficiency of the lungs and increases the likelihood of addiction.

Al-Trawneh said, in an interview with the program «Pulse of Opinion» on «Al-Rai» radio, that the harms of smoking are not limited to the respiratory system, but affect various organs of the body, stressing the necessity of protecting children and adolescents from direct and indirect exposure to tobacco.

He appreciated the government's directive to close establishments that provide hookahs or tobacco products to those under the age of eighteen, considering that tightening control and applying penalties will contribute to reducing the spread of smoking among young age groups.

Al-Trawneh warned against the prevailing belief that hookahs are less harmful than cigarettes, affirming that hookahs and electronic cigarettes in various forms pose health risks.

He called for enhancing the role of the family, school, medical sector, and media in raising awareness about the dangers of smoking, alongside providing programs and means to help smokers quit.
