Al-Wehdat deepened its path in the Professional Football League competition yesterday after overcoming Shabab Al-Ordon 1-0 at the King Abdullah II Stadium, concluding the sixth week.
Al-Wehdat insisted on intensifying its attempts and opportunities despite missing a penalty kick, returning to settle the situation in the final moments, raising its tally to 11 points in second place, leaving the loser at the bottom with 3.
"Al-Rai" had indicated last Sunday the direct entry into the league's atmosphere after previously being in the lower positions on the standings table, which is led by Al-Faisaly with 14 points.
Shabab Al-Ordon presented a strong performance during which it suffered from a lack of conversion, and stood with Al-Wehdat for a minute of silence for the souls of the martyrs of the Karak incident, while raising several banners expressing solidarity with the nation's grief.
Names on the field
Al-Wehdat represented by: Ahmed Arbash, Arafat Al-Haj, Firas Shelbaieh, Dialloque Titi, Mustafa Kamal, Fadi Awad, Mohammed Al-Daoud, Bashar Al-Dhiyabat, Mohammed Mawali, Jimmy Siaj, and Hamza Al-Naeem.
Shabab Al-Ordon represented by: Walid Essam, Yazid Mahfouz, Salem Al-Ajalin, Jordi Duran, Mohammed Abu Ghoush, Saul, Michael, Ayham Hisham, Hamza Al-Shamali, Qusay Tannous, and Mohammed Abu Arqub.
Clear activity
The creative Abu Ghoush stood out in sending balls and creating danger, announcing the beginning of clear activity and an early pursuit to visit the net, through clever passes towards Abu Arqub and Al-Shamali in front of Arbash's goal, who found the post acting on his behalf to block Hisham's chance.
This was met by organized movements from Awad, Mawali, and Shelbaieh before Essam thwarted Siaj's runs and Al-Dhiyabat's breakaway, giving the proceedings an attacking nature.
All those serious attempts led to speeding up the game, while instances of roughness and the showing of yellow cards appeared along with forced substitutions for both teams.
Amid those chances, the defensive walls were subjected to direct pressure with frequent stoppages and returns to video technology to confirm controversial situations. From one of these, Al-Haj shot a powerful ball that touched Al-Ajalin's hand inside the area, earning Al-Wehdat a penalty kick taken by Mawali, but Essam was ready to save it brilliantly.
During the final moments before the break, Al-Naeem almost opened the scoring while facing the goal alone from a long ball he took with high skill, but the conversion was missing at the last moment, and Abu Ghoush broke through near Arbash, but the ball went wide.
Late settlement
As soon as the Shabab substitute Khaldoun Sabra entered the second half, he imposed a presence upfront and came close to scoring if not for Arbash's brilliance, and Mawali fired a powerful shot that Essam cleared again.
Changes to the lineup continued for both camps with the aim of refreshing the team, and opportunities continued, but this time from long-range shots, and Al-Haj and Kamal took charge of intercepting balls before real danger.
As time passed, the signs of determination to score became clear, especially with the frequency of errors and fatigue in saving balls. Al-Wehdat resorted to searching for outlets leading to Essam's goal, and succeeded in doing so specifically from a defensive coverage error to find Papa Diop alone, placing the ball on the ground into the far corner, announcing the settlement in the 86th minute.
Shabab Al-Ordon tried to rectify the situation with frequent attacking presence, while Al-Haj and his teammates excelled in maintaining the goal, and the lead was almost doubled before the final whistle, which smiled upon the winner.
Man of the match
Al-Wehdat defender Arafat Al-Haj deserved to be the man of the match after intercepting many balls and creating chances, outperforming the skills of Mohammed Abu Ghoush and Shabab Al-Ordon goalkeeper Walid Essam in terms of performance.
