Bayern Munich faces an early true test of their ability to compete for the title when they host Arsenal, the English champion, today Wednesday in the third round of the unified group stage of the UEFA Champions League, but they will do so without their outstanding French winger Michael Olise.
Olise, born in London and who began his career in Arsenal's youth categories, is absent due to suspension after receiving two yellow cards within one minute in Bayern's disappointing 3-3 draw with Viking of Norway last week.
After receiving a first warning for a foul, the clearly frustrated Olise responded to verbal provocation from Viking's Croatian captain Zlatko Tripic by throwing the ball towards his head, earning the first red card of his career.
After being named among the candidates for the Ballon d'Or thanks to his impressive performance last season, the former Crystal Palace winger continued his brilliance this season.
Olise scored nine goals and provided five assists in 10 matches for Bayern in all competitions.
With Jamal Musiala suffering from injury and illness, and the declining performance of Serge Gnabry and Leonhart Karl, Olise and the always reliable English striker Harry Kane have carried the offensive burden for Bayern so far this season.
The England captain scored nine goals and provided six assists in 10 matches.
When Bayern was trailing 0-2 away against Viking last week, Kane almost single-handedly led the comeback, scoring two goals and providing another.
After Bayern's resounding 6-1 victory over Leipzig in the German league on Saturday, Kane said the team would miss Olise's impact, but called on the rest of the star-studded lineup to take responsibility.
He added, "When you miss one of your most important players, you will certainly feel it, but then it's up to the others to step up and show that they can take their chance. We talk a lot about the strength of the lineup, and we talk about the need for everyone to be ready for the right moment, and whoever plays must be prepared."
The performance of Colombian Luis Dias was among the many positives from the resounding victory over Leipzig on Saturday.
The 29-year-old player, who was disappointed after a mediocre start to the season, scored three goals and provided an assist in one of his best matches since transferring from Liverpool in 2025.
Among the best teams in Europe
Despite moving from North London to the Bavarian capital in 2023, Kane has seen a lot of Arsenal since joining Bayern.
Bayern met the "Gunners" in the quarter-finals of the 2023-2024 season, qualifying by a single goal, but suffered a 1-3 loss in the unified group stage of last season's edition.
With domestic and international matches coming at a rapid pace, Kane hasn't had time to exchange friendly words with his Arsenal rivals.
He explained, "We talked a bit during the previous international break and we knew the match was coming, but I think we're all too busy to exchange messages now, with a match every three days."
The resounding victory over Leipzig once again showed that the German football giant outperforms its domestic rivals, but Arsenal presents a different kind of test, and Kane and his teammates are looking forward to facing the team of Spanish coach Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal, still nursing the pain of losing last season's final on penalties to French side Paris Saint-Germain, started the season strongly with 10 wins in 11 matches across all competitions.
Kane said, "It's a big match, we're facing one of the best teams in Europe, and you always have to enjoy these occasions. We're testing ourselves against one of the best, and we're playing at home, and the energy from the fans will make it a special night."
