Alonso: Historic Formula 1 circuits have been "assassinated" by hybrid cars

Spanish two-time world champion Fernando Alonso confirmed yesterday, Wednesday, in Baku that some of the most famous Formula 1 circuits have been "assassinated" in the era of the new hybrid cars introduced this season, calling for a change.

The Aston Martin driver's comments came following the criticism directed at the recent Spanish Grand Prix held at the new Madrid "Madring" circuit, which proved to offer very limited opportunities for overtaking.

Current world champion, Britain's Lando Norris (McLaren), had described it as "not a great circuit."

Alonso said on the sidelines of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday, "Some circuits have been literally assassinated this year."

He added, "Behind the wheel, especially if you drive in other categories or have driven other Formula 1 cars before, you feel a kind of frustration."

He pointed to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, and the Japanese race at Suzuka as circuits that have lost part of their appeal.

The winner of 32 Grand Prix races explained, "Silverstone, which is an amazing circuit, is no longer fun."

He continued, "At Spa, going through the 'Eau Rouge' corner has become almost embarrassing, and the same applies to the 130R corner at Suzuka," referring to corners that were previously considered among the most daunting, but are now navigated today without the need to use the full power of the cars.

The 45-year-old veteran driver expressed his hope that the premier class of motorsport would find a way to bring the joy of racing back to Formula 1, with the possibility of making further adjustments to the balance between engine power and battery power, to avoid having to recover energy in some of the fastest corners.

Alonso, world champion with Renault in 2005 and 2006, is in nineteenth place in the world championship standings with only three points. Italian Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) leads the standings with 292 points.
