Alfaro extends his contract with Paraguay

Argentine coach of the Paraguayan national football team, Gustavo Alfaro, has extended his contract until 2030, with a view to the World Cup of the same year, of which the country will host a single match, as announced by the local federation president.

Doubts had surrounded the future of the architect behind the return of «Albirroja» to the World Cup in the North American edition, following their elimination by the French national team in the Round of 16, in their first appearance since the 2010 edition in South Africa.

To announce the extension, Paraguayan Football Association president Robert Harrison wrote on Instagram, «2030, let's go!».

The official accompanied his post with a picture alongside Alfaro, 64 years old, holding a national team jersey highlighting the date of the upcoming global football showcase.

The Argentine coach, who calls himself the «Maker of +Utopia+ (Miracles)», will remain at the helm of a team that pulled off a surprise by eliminating the German national team in the Round of 32, before putting up a tough fight and losing to the men of French «Blues» coach Didier Deschamps in the Round of 16.

Following a tense encounter marked by numerous rough challenges from the Paraguayan players, Deschamps deplored the mutual insults exchanged during the match, though Alfaro defended his players, considering his team's play to be fiercely competitive.

Paraguay will host a single group-stage match of the 2030 World Cup, commemorating the centenary of the world's most prominent football event.

The same applies to Uruguay and Argentina, with a single match for each, while all other matches will take place in the territory of the three co-hosts: Spain, Morocco, and Portugal.
