Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz saved two match points the day before yesterday to defeat American Taylor Fritz and give Europe a 7-5 lead over Team World, ahead of the final day of the Laver Cup tennis competition.
Team World had overturned a 3-1 deficit from the end of the previous day, after clinching the first two matches in London, where all three singles matches went to a decisive tie-break.
American Learner Tien defeated Italian Flavio Cobolli, before German Alexander Zverev, the French Open and US Open champion, lost to Australian Alex de Minaur.
Alcaraz had lost to Fritz in last year's edition of the Laver Cup, when Team World achieved a big win in San Francisco.
But this time, the Spaniard succeeded in getting his revenge after a thrilling encounter that went down to the wire, which he won 6-3, 4-6, and 13-11.
Alcaraz said, "Two tough and great losses today, and of course I was thinking a little about what happened last year, when we lost all the matches on Saturday."
He added: "Before the match, I was trying not to let it happen again. So I was a little nervous at the beginning, and I won't lie about that. But I am very happy that I was finally able to get the win."
Zverev teamed up with Norwegian Casper Ruud to give Europe the advantage before Sunday's matches, after they defeated Kazakh Alexander Bublik and American Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 7-6 (9/7) in the final match of the day in the doubles competition.
The team that first reaches 13 points will be crowned champion in the tournament held over three days at the O2 Arena in London.
