The head of the Burma Municipality Committee, Hamza Ayesh, said on Monday that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in cooperation with the municipality and funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands, will implement an environmental and development project worth 10 million euros, aimed at reducing sedimentation in King Talal Dam and preserving its storage capacity.
Ayesh added that the project will span five years and includes the implementation of 100 water harvesting wells, in addition to providing temporary job opportunities for members of the local community.
He explained that the project comes within the framework of efforts aimed at protecting water resources and enhancing environmental sustainability in the region.
Ayesh pointed out that the municipality is seeking to establish a tourist restaurant in Burma with funding from an Italian grant, and in partnership with the Women's Empowerment Association in the Burma district, with the aim of supporting tourism activity and enhancing local community participation in development projects.
He indicated that Burma enjoys environmental and tourism assets, as it includes vast areas of forest land, and the largest concentration of forest trees in Jerash Governorate is located within its borders. Additionally, about 90% of the Dibeen forest area lies within the municipality's borders, alongside King Talal Dam.
Ayesh said that the municipality carries out continuous campaigns to limit the random dumping of waste, but the shortage of working staff, especially sanitation workers, limits efforts to maintain cleanliness and preserve the environment.
He added that the municipality has worked on demarcating structural roads and expanding agricultural roads to reach 12 meters, which facilitates farmers' access to their lands and improves transportation to tourist sites.
The area of the Burma district is about 96,000 dunums, and it includes the areas of Al-Majdal, Al-Jazaza, Khashiba, Himta, Alimoun, Al-Fawara, and Al-Houna.
