Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his reservations on Monday during an interview with CBS News regarding the potential live broadcast of the execution of the perpetrator of an attack that targeted American soldiers.
Johnson considered that "the concerns lie in creating a video clip that would be used as a recruitment tool for terrorists in the future," adding, "We have to think about the political consequences of all that."
He confirmed that he would not watch the execution if it were broadcast live.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had stated that Nidal Hasan, a psychiatrist in the US Army who killed 13 people in a shooting at a military base in 2009, would be executed by firing squad and that the execution would be broadcast live online, which sparked discontent among both Republican and Democratic party ranks.
During the interview broadcast by CBS News on Monday, Johnson confirmed that this idea does not have the support of all his colleagues in the House of Representatives.
However, US President Donald Trump confirmed that the decision regarding this broadcast has not yet been finalized.
