The Ministry of Justice adopts new instructions for the accreditation of translators

The Ministry of Justice has issued the 2026 instructions for the accreditation of translators before the Notary Public, aiming to regulate accreditation procedures, verify the linguistic and professional competence of translators, ensure the accuracy of official documents and transactions, and enhance the quality of judicial services provided to citizens.

The new instructions set clear conditions and standards for accrediting translators, including passing a specialized language test for candidates with academic qualifications relevant to language, while allowing those without specialized academic qualifications in this field, but who possess the necessary linguistic competence, to apply for the test after completing a specialized qualifying course.

Minister of Justice Dr. Bassam Talhouni stated that the instructions come within the framework of implementing the provisions of the amended Notary Public Law, and constitute a step towards developing translator accreditation mechanisms, transitioning from traditional procedures to an institutional system based on verifying professional competence, strengthening oversight, and applying clear standards that ensure the quality and accuracy of translation.

He added that the importance of the instructions is not limited to regulating the practice of legal translation and defining accreditation requirements, but extends to building an integrated legal and professional framework that protects the rights of clients, enhances the integrity of official documents and transactions, and establishes the professional responsibility of translators, thereby strengthening confidence in judicial services in the Kingdom.

Talhouni emphasized that the instructions represent a step toward developing the legal translation profession in Jordan by establishing clear professional standards based on competence, accuracy, and reliability, which enhances confidence in official documents and transactions and supports the Ministry's efforts to upgrade the level of judicial services.

In a related context, the Ministry signed three agreements with public universities—the University of Jordan, Al-Balqa Applied University, and Yarmouk University—to organize tests and hold qualifying courses for translators, in accordance with the provisions of the new instructions.

The Ministry is scheduled to begin receiving applications for the accreditation of translators before the Notary Public via its electronic portal, which will contribute to simplifying procedures, facilitating the submission and tracking of applications, and increasing the efficiency of service delivery.
