The Swiss Embassy in Jordan celebrated the Swiss National Day yesterday evening, with the attendance of more than 1,000 guests, including over 200 children, in an evening celebrating the long-standing friendship and strong ties between Switzerland and Jordan.
The ceremony, attended by representatives of Jordanian institutions, the diplomatic corps, international organizations, the private sector, civil society, the Swiss community in Jordan, as well as partners and friends of Switzerland, served as an opportunity to celebrate the close relationship between Switzerland and Jordan, which spans more than 75 years and continues to grow through cooperation and exchange between institutions, companies, universities, organizations, and above all, between the peoples.
The Swiss Ambassador to Amman, Emilija Georgieva, delivered a speech during the ceremony in which she highlighted the values that form the core of Switzerland's commitment to Jordan, represented by trust, innovation, and shared values.
She said: "For me, this celebration is much more than just a National Day celebration; it reflects the image that the Swiss-Jordanian network of relations has reached today. From what I see, I can assure you that it is a beautiful and colorful image, extending across various sectors of society, and most importantly, bringing together different age groups."
She added: "These values are manifested in several areas of Swiss-Jordanian cooperation, and the environment and science diplomacy are important areas where Swiss and Jordanian expertise have combined, especially through cooperation in the field of water and environmental challenges."
She pointed out that initiatives such as the (Blue Peace Initiative), hosted by the Jordan University of Science and Technology and its (Water Diplomacy) center, demonstrate how scientific knowledge and dialogue can contribute to addressing regional challenges."
The Swiss Ambassador emphasized that promoting education and providing opportunities for youth is another important dimension of this relationship, noting that Switzerland supports initiatives aimed at enhancing vocational and technical skills and opening new horizons for employment.
She highlighted a number of partnerships that embody this cooperation, which had a prominent presence during the evening, including the contribution of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, where students of the academy presented a range of traditional Swiss dishes, such as raclette and bratwurst.
She explained that "the increasing numbers of Jordanian graduates from Swiss institutions are further evidence of the strength of the ties between the peoples of the two countries. Through education, professional exchanges, and networks – which are promoted, for example, by the Swiss-Jordanian Alumni Association – these ties continue to build bridges between Switzerland and Jordan and create opportunities for future cooperation."
Ambassador Georgieva also pointed to the embassy's partnership with the Turquoise Mountain Foundation in the field of vocational training, saying: "We are proud to work with you in the field of vocational training," inviting guests to visit the foundation's pavilion during the celebration to learn about and support its work.
The ceremony included musical performances and DJ sets. A dedicated area for children also provided creative, craft, and sports activities, making the celebration an occasion that included guests of all ages.
In a statement by the Swiss Embassy, it noted that the attendance of more than 1,000 guests reflected the wide network of relations that has developed between Switzerland and Jordan over the years – starting from diplomacy and development cooperation, to science, education, business, culture, and personal ties.
The embassy stated that it looks forward to continuing to strengthen these ties and to creating new opportunities for Swiss-Jordanian exchange and cooperation in the coming years.
