The South Korean Foreign Minister will meet his American counterpart in Washington this week, in a meeting topped by billion-dollar deals, with the possible discussion of deploying forces in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul announced that Minister Cho Hyun will leave for Washington on Thursday for a visit that will last until Saturday, including talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
South Korea had committed to investments in the United States worth $350 billion under an agreement signed last year to avoid the repercussions of the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, but the specific projects and final terms are still under negotiation.
Seoul is also considering the possibility of deploying military forces in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which has become a major point of contention in the Middle East war.
Trump has exerted significant pressure on his ally South Korea to participate in international efforts to counter Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran has warned Seoul against intervening.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul said that the two sides will discuss a wide range of issues, including relations between South Korea and the United States, the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and other regional and global issues.
