The national basketball team opened its campaign in the 20th edition of the Asian Games with an 80-83 defeat against Chinese Taipei, in the match held yesterday at the Aichi Arena as part of Group B, which alongside the "Jordan Falcons" includes Chinese Taipei, Qatar, and Iran.
The national team's entry into the match was not successful, as Chinese Taipei imposed its dominance from the opening minutes, finishing the first quarter ahead 13-17, and continuing its superiority in the second quarter which it clinched 23-29, with both teams leaving the court at halftime with the Taiwanese leading by a full ten points at 36-46.
According to the technical analysis of the match, the team's defense suffered from clear issues during this phase, most notably delayed defensive close-outs on perimeter shooters, poor communication in defensive switches, and coverage on backdoor cuts, which allowed Chinese Taipei to score easy points from help defense and achieve a high shooting percentage of 50% from the field and 39% from behind the three-point arc.
Late Reaction
The "Jordan Falcons" did not surrender despite the large deficit, presenting a completely different image in the second half. They clinched the third quarter 14-19, before continuing their push in the final quarter and winning it 25-23 as well. However, this remarkable improvement came late and was not enough to make up for the deficit created by the Taiwanese in the first half, leaving the team to lose by just three points at 80-83.
Reasons for the Loss
The technical analysis of the match attributes the result to a combination of offensive and defensive errors:
On the defensive end, there was a noticeable delay in closing out on shooter Lung Mao, which allowed him an open three-pointer, in addition to losing coverage on Brandon Gilbeck on the perimeter.
Offensively, the team suffered from a lack of off-ball movement, with three players crowding inside the paint in multiple situations, making the opponent's help defense task easier.
A heavy reliance on individual effort and poor shot selection was also observed, as the team shot 27 out of 71 attempts from the field for 38%, and only 6 out of 27 three-point attempts for 22%, compared to a 50% shooting percentage for the opposing team.
The analysis also points to struggles in half-court team offense with a near-complete absence of off-ball movement, and the team's failure to capitalize on second-chance opportunities despite grabbing 16 offensive rebounds, resulting in only 10 second-chance points.
Worrying Injury for Al-Duwairi
The defeat increased concerns within the national team ranks after center Ahmed Al-Duwairi left the match due to an injury, at a time when fans and the coaching staff are awaiting the extent of its severity and the duration of his absence from the courts.
Al-Duwairi's injury comes at a sensitive time, ahead of the upcoming window of the Asian Qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA World Cup, which doubles fears regarding his readiness for the upcoming matches, especially given the importance of his role under the basket and his vast international experience.
Al-Duwairi is expected to undergo the necessary medical examinations to determine the nature of the injury and the duration of treatment and rehabilitation, thereby deciding his availability to participate with the national team in upcoming fixtures.
Top Scorers
Abdullah Al-Juwani and Perrin Buford topped the national team's scoring list with 18 points each, while star player Dar Tucker added 17 points and 8 rebounds on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, in an impressive performance that made him the best player in the squad.
Next Station
The national team is preparing to play its second match in the group tomorrow, Saturday, against the Qatari national team, which secured a victory in its opening round against Iran with a score of 53-59.
The "Jordan Falcons" hope to bounce back from their opening loss and achieve their first win, which would boost their chances of competing for one of the qualifying tickets to the quarter-finals.
It is worth noting that the men's basketball competition in the tournament features 12 teams divided into three groups. Group A includes Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia, while Group C includes China, the Philippines, Bahrain, and Kazakhstan. The group winners and runners-up from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams across all three groups, will qualify directly to the quarter-finals.
